Mare Gestation and Progression

A mares gestation is on average 340 days but it can go well over 360 days or as early as 315 days. There is no such thing as a "Due Date" for mares unfortunately. But most mares give signs of approaching labor to help us out in this area. Some of these signs.

Some mares may display all of these signs, and some may not display any of these signs. Within a few days of foaling you will notice a change in the low part of the mares belly as it will look pointed. This is an indication foal is repositioning to repare for foaling.

Starlight Ranch basis on 340 days for approximate foaling date.

A mares hind end starts to relax before foaling, her vulva will lengthen and inside color will change. Muscles on her rear relax where they look like jello before foaling. The amount of relaxing can depend on number of foals mare has had.

  1. Appetite may change
  2. Filling of the udders
  3. Relaxing of the pelvis and vulva
  4. Drop in mares abdomen
  5. Attitude may change
  6. Texture of udders
  7. No resistance in the tail
  8. Waxing

The watch on Tea begins!!

11/29 - 298 days - Not a lot of change in Tea's outward appearance, decision made to have her vet checked to make sure all was well with her and the foal.

12/4 - 302 days - Tea checked by the vet and cinfirmed both are doing really well. Foal is eye was measured to determine if at the proper size for almost a term foal. Tea not showing a lot of change in her bag, vet wants monitored closely and notified the week of Christmas of her progress. Tea had gained 200 lbs with pregancy to date.

12/7 - 305 days - Tea colicky and monitored closely, added bran to her died and system settled down.

12/13 - 311 days - Tea continues to make progress and showing a little bit more but very slight progress in her bag. Tea is more and more uncomfortable and getting very picky with her eating. Attitude is still very good, no mood changes.

12/19 - 318 days - Tea is making slow progress, coat is getting slick and is loosing winter hair from around her bag, can feel mammory development but not a lot visible.

12/21 - 320 days - Tea very little change, but skin is loosening and can feel the glands have more substance. Just progressing very slowely, have a feeling she will do a lot at the very end.

12/26 - 325 days - Tea was definately repositioning the foal two days ago as her bag has disappeared again as there is no pressure on the area. But that too shall change as she gets closer. On the 1st she will be started on Domperidone, and we also have a lead on some colostrum so once we get that ordered this next week we should be good to go.

12/30 - 329 days - Tea bag had regressed. Tea was very agitated today even when out in pasture.

1/1 - 331 days - Tea bag has made progress the past two days. Tea has also had discharge and is doing some kicking at her belly. She was started on the hormone Domperidone on 12/31 and will remain on for the next 10 to 15 days.

1/5 - 335 days - Tea has been uncomfortable and colicky at times. Bag is a hard consistancy and has not changed much.

1/10 - 340 days - Tea bag is softer and changed some but no wax. She is more and more uncomfortable with lots of yawing and bitting at her belly, moving forward and back in her favorite corner. Was out in pasture and wanted to be away from Maddie, when went out to get them in she came right to me. Normally she is not ready to come in so this is a change with her. Slowed down on her meals and is drinking more water.

1/13 - 1/17 - Tea bag is full, milk droplets on legs, turned down feed mixture completely but kept on hay. periods of discomfort but nothing signifcant. Lots of laying down resting for long periods of time. At times extremely uncomfortable but did not continue.

1/21 - 351 days - Tea vet checked and all is fine, just has some final relaxation of her cervix to complete before foaling.

1/22 - 352 days - Tea bag is full, more wax on tits and dried milk on legs, more pacing and not much interest in eating. When laying down not as relaxed as normal and not staying down as long as normal.

1/23 - 353 days - Tea at 5:00 am had more white wax and staw stuck to her tits, colostrum was in. 5:45 started to buck and kick at the walls, circling and just not happy at all. She did this for about 20 minutes to a half hour. Then settled down for about 1 1/2 hours then slowly started up again about every 5 to 10 minutes. Then around 11: 40 Tea became calmer even though still walking her stall. She laid down three times and the third time down her water broke.

Tea was pushing hard but not making a lot of progress so we assisted her as she was getting tired. The fillies shoulders were really large but one past she came shooting out. Foals legs were over 40 inches long. Tea passed the placenta within a 1/2 hour after foaling. She was disoriented after foaling due to pain so gave her some banamine to help with the pain. Once the pain subsided Tea started mothering her baby and did awesome after that. No issues at all and is the calmest mare we have ever been around after foaling. She allows us to work with her and her baby, so makes it very easy to do what we need too.

Tea foaled a healthy Bay Tobiano Filly on 1/23. Kadie

1/25 - Tea & Kadie had there vet check. Tea toned up really well, extra fluids almost gone, but she did have a couple tears just inside of her cervix. So will be doctoring that for the next couple days. Kadie check was great and she received more than enought colostrum. Tea will be bred on foal heat in 2010.
