Mare Gestation and ProgressionA mares gestation is on average 340 days but it can go well over 360 days or as early as 315 days. There is no such thing as a "Due Date" for mares unfortunately. But most mares give signs of approaching labor to help us out in this area. Some of these signs. Some mares may display all of these signs, and some may not display any of these signs. Within a few days of foaling you will notice a change in the low part of the mares belly as it will look pointed. This is an indication foal is repositioning to repare for foaling. Starlight Ranch basis on 340 days for approximate foaling date. A mares hind end starts to relax before foaling, her vulva will lengthen and inside color will change. Muscles on her rear relax where they look like jello before foaling. The amount of relaxing can depend on number of foals mare has had. |

Mia's Belly Progress

The watch on Mia begins!!11/10 - Mia is progressing well and enjoying a lot of time outside in the pasture. 200 days in foal, 146 days until her due date. 11/30 - Mia is doing great, measured her belly as she is looking very pregnant 84 inches around and three months to go, 221 days in foal. 125 days unti due date. 12/21 - Mia is a happy girl and progressing nicely, no changes in her bag as of yet. Measured her belly this evening at 88 inches around at 241 days in foal, 105 days until due date. 1/8 - Mia belly is really growing, do notice a change in her bag with slight udder distention. She is at 289 days in foal, 87 days until due date. 1/12 - Measured her belly at 95 inches, she is 263 days in foal, 83 days until due date. She has become picky with her food which we are sure due is due to the foal taking up a lot of room. Mia's bag is starting to show signs of change and nipples are smooth. 1/19 - Mia's bag continues to loosen but no fill, she is at 270 days in foal, 76 days until due date. 1/31 - Mia's bag is in a holding pattern which is good, not filling as of yet, just has relaxed a lot since early Janaury. She is at 282 days in foal, 64 days until due date. By the size of her belly we really do not feel she will make it to her due date, she did foal at 11 months in 2013. 2/9 - Mia's has been in a holding pattern for the past 9 days, but last night started to see she was beginning to fill. Todays pictures show it a little better than last night, we will see if she continues to build or just kinda thinking about it. She is at 291 days in foal, 55 days until due date, 29 days until she is in the safe zone of 320 days. Feeling good that she will make it just fine but if she keeps building we will be looking at a March foaling date not April. 2/16 - Mia's is doing well but is very picky at the moment with her food. Doesn't have a lot of room left in her belly so she is eating her food much slower than normal. As you can see her bag is filling and making nice progress. She is at 298 days in foal, 48 days until due date, 22 days until she is in the safe zone of 320 days. Starting to get excited about seeing her new addition. 2/21 - Mia is showing signs of having lots of pressure, you will see her lower her head when standing to try and release. Has also been doing some yawning also signs of being uncomfortable. She is eating well but takes her time and really pics through to find the good stuff, we think she just likes using her excess hay as bedding. She is at 303 days in foal, 43 days until due date, 17 days until she is in the safe zone of 320 days. Thanks for helping keep an eye on our girl!! 2/23 - Mia very uncomfortable this evening, lots of rolling, rubbing butt and pawing, looks like foal could be changing position. 2/25 - Mia lost her mucus plug this morning as it was laying on the top of her stall bedding, then lost a little more while stall was being cleaned. 2/26 - Mia's bag is about 1/2 full but tight and tits are not yet filled out. Mia also needs to wait 10 more days to be in the safe zone. She is at 308 days in foal, 38 days until due date. Extra eyes are very much appreciated!! 2/27 - Lots of speckling showed up on Mia's bag this evening surrounder her tits' as well as starting to fill out and some dark plugs hanging from one tit. 2/28 - Mia's bag is really starting to increase but still has a ways to go since bag and tits are not yet completely filled out. She is expressing some milk but the strip is at 8.0 which is great no chance for a while but she is definately making progress daily. Tomorrow since we will be home she will be turned out for a while to move a round and roll in the snow. 3/2 - Mia's bag is really full but has a little bit more to go, tits are also filling out and lots of speckling. Mia is off her feed, taking her hours to eat what she normally does in a half hour to an hour. Her attitude is good even though showing signs of being very uncomfortable. 3/9 - Mia's has been doing a lot of rolling this past week, bag continues to fill and has a small amout of speckling. She is still picking what she wants through her feed and leaving the rest on the floor of her stall. She has been pretty quiet with times of showing pressure with butt rubbing and pawing. PH levels were till high as of the 8th, will recheck this evening. 3/10 - Mia's lots of rubbing the wall, pawing and just plain unvomfortable most of the day but settle down during the night. Bag full with a little bit of wax on one tit, getting soft in back and really full through the flanks. Eating a little more but still picky. Has not laid down in almost 2 days and PH level dropped. 3/12 - Mia's bag is full, tits are full and PH level is at a 6.4 or a little below. She has been uncomfortable all day and is redder in back than she was last night. Has eaten some but still not eating full meals. 3/14 - Mia was pretty uncomfortable all day showing signs of possible foaling, at 4:30 was sweating a bit and still uncomfortable. Suspect the foal was trying to position since around 10:00 she finally settled down and was quiet for the next couple of days.. 3/17 - Mia's bag is so full and so are her tit's hard to believe she is still holding on. Was kicking at her belly a bit yesterday and today has been showing signs of being in pain again. Rubbing a lot, chewing at the wall and biting at her belly but not yet constant with her activity levels. Everything else shows she is ready to roll. Also showed a little bit of wax again at 3 am check. 2/18 - Mia has been agitated in the mornings beginning around 5 then settles down after around 2 pm for the rest of the night. Still showing wax, is very relaxed and looks ready to go at any time. Her appitie is good and is finishing everything she is given. Acted colicky so did go home around noon and hand walked her each hour for about 15 minutes until she was more comfortable. 3/19 - Mia is 329 days, started to be agitated again around 5 am and continued to increase until water broke around noon. She delivered another very long legged filly which took her a few days to get into position. With a little assistance she delivered really well, but was still not passing the placenta over an hour out. So had to help hand deliver the placenta by putting a little pressure, once delivered gave her a little more banamine. She then went right to work being an awesome mom. |
